Jay Anast, owner of Alliance Metals, used to run a liquor store and gas station. "I just didn't see it as a really fun future. This came my way and I thought, well there's no shortage of garbage, everybody wants to clean things up," says Anast, who bought Alliance Metals 8 years ago. "It's good for society. If I wasn't here somebody else would be doing it so that's true too, I can't take total credit, but I can say hey, last week I recycled 800,000 cans." Anast has received an award from the West Oakland District Council, a local civic group, for his work.
Here Anast is standing in front of 1,000 lbs. bales of aluminum. Each will sell for $1,400.
