Whether or not she becomes the next mayor of Oakland, Audrey Rice Oliver has already proclaimed herself the victor.

In October of 1991 her home was destroyed in the Oakland Hills fire. She and her daughter lost everything. “We had to rebuild and grow our minds, not just from the outside, but from the inside, too,” she says.

Oliver plans to attract medium to large size companies to help rebuild Oakland. Oliver talks about her ideas for Oakland in categories of short and long range goals. She wants to clean up the streets by enforcing something like Operation Clean Sweep, she says, where volunteers and businesses perform a massive makeover by washing windows, picking up trash, and painting where necessary.

Effective marketing of Oakland is a key concern for Oliver, who in June signed on with the San Francisco political strategy firm of Stanton, Hughes, and Shafer to run her campaign. She says she would like to see Oakland develop a self-image that is positive and that sticks, like New York City's `big apple' campaign.
