The hardest thing was photographing the crack dealers. I was scared that I might be shot. The kids even got mad when I photographed a memorial they put up for a young man who was murdered on my street corner. This was at Christmas. I gave up but decided to photograph the surface of Hayes Valley and show that it is an eclectic community of people from every racial group and all walks of life.
