Oakland Promise Turns Two

Out of twenty Oakland kindergarteners, how many will ever receive a college diploma? The answer is about two. Now the city wants to change that through an ambitious program called the Oakland Promise. There are lots of components to the program, but reporter Cassady Rosenblum focuses on a big one: college scholarships. She visits a student and hears how the city’s new program is working in year two. Spoiler alert: it needs more mentors.
