The Friends of the Cerrito Theater quickly gained the support of hundreds of El Cerrito residents who wanted to see the theater restored and reopened.

In March 2002 the El Cerrito City Council took out a three-month lease on the building to study what would need to be done to renovate and reopen the movie house. The El Cerrito Redevelopment Board is scheduled to vote on a theater plan on May 29th, 2002.

On May 3rd the City and Friends threw an open house at the theater for local residents to see the building and learn about its history. Two local bands, Sweet Basil and Hot Popcorn, played while over 3000 people showed up to eat, watch, talk, and even dance.

Watch this video to experience the open house and hear what locals think of the theater. Hot Popcorn with El Cerrito singer Jenny O'Leary play in the background
