The Cerrito opened on Christmas Day, 1937, with a showing of Thin Ice, starring Sonja Henie and Tyrone Power. Owned by Mr. Goldenberg, the theater was designed by architect William B. David and operated by J. Blumenfeld.

One of the most vivid memories local residents have of the theater is not the movies, but the dishes. The theater gave out dishes - cups and saucers, platters, whole dinner sets - to the ladies on certain nights to bring in more business.

Not many pictures can be found of the Cerrito in its glory days. Click on the photo to the right to see a few that have been recovered.

Photos and memorabilia

Many El Cerrito residents remember the theater. Pat Garcia's father owned Jordan's Drugstore, right next door to the theater on the north side.

She remembers growing up around the picture show, and even worked there for about six months when she was a teenager.

Oriene Weeks, an El Cerrito native, also worked as an usherette at the theater from 1945-1946.
