When the Oakland Unified School District cut a free after-school supper program last fall, students were not happy. Like many students, Davohn Hackett relied on that supper for a hot meal every night—not always a guarantee without the program. Davohn and other students organized a response, confronting district staff at school board meetings and forcing the district to listen to their demands. In January, their work paid off. The supper program returned and expanded. Reporter Wyatt Kroopf has the story.
