Addicts Find Relief in Kava

Four months into his sobriety, Cooper Lee was “white knuckling it.” But then he walked into MeloMelo, a quiet, down-tempo kava bar. Finally, he had found something that helped him relax.

 

Kava is a Polynesian root-brewed tea that has a calming quality. MeloMelo has become a space where people struggling with addiction can come for a calming cup of kava and a supporting community. However, science hasn’t weighed in on the potential benefits or adverse effects of kava… yet. Reporters Susie Neilson and Padmini Parthasarathy looked into it.
