Working with Donor Families
Yanira Vazquez-Azpiri Yanira Vazquez-Azpiri is a family services coordinator with the California Transplant Donor Network. Before she came to CTDN, she worked at UC Medical Center in Los Angeles for 10 years in the intensive care unit. Her specialty was pediatrics. During her career at UC Medical Center, Vazquez-Aspiri worked with patients who were on the waiting list for organs. Her experiences with these patients piqued her interest in organ and tissue donation. She started working at CTDN shortly after she moved to the Bay Area five years ago. Vasquez-Azpiri deals with a range of emotions from grief to remorse each time she works with a family. When someone dies, it is her responsibility to speak to their family about organ and tissue donation. She dispels myths and tries to educates people about how they can change someone's life by choosing to donate their loved one's organs and tissue. Because of the sensitive nature of her work, Vazquez-Azpiri has been trained in bereavement, trauma and crisis counseling.
